Descendants of Benjamin Harris

Chapter 3 of Part IV, Descendants of Benjamin Harris

By Garda M. Hodgson

CHILDREN OF BENJAMIN HARRIS, JR. AND POLLY HARRIS
(Child #3 of Benjamin Harris and Rutha Byers)

Benjamin Harris Jr.3 (Benj.2, Isaac1) was born in about 1794 in Greenville County, South Carolina. He married Polly whose maiden name is not known. He died after 1819 but before 1824. Benjamin Harris, Sr., was ordered by the White County Court on April 17, 1826, "to bring here into court on the first day of the next term all the children of Polly Harris heretofore bound to the said Benjamin Harris as apprentices...." (See FHL film #024,868 White County, Tennessee Court Minutes 1824-1827).

Previous White County Court Records were checked to see when the children were bound to Benjamin Harris, but the book for that period was missing. There was a book for the years 1817 to 1819, but the order was not found in that book. It seems the children must have been bound to their grandfather after 1819, but before 1824.

The next court date when Benjamin Harris was to appear was July 10, 1826 when "the said Polly moved the court to have discharged from the service of the said Benjamin Harris, two apprentices, children of the said Polly, one called and known by the name of William Harris and the other by the name of Benjamin Harris.... It seems to the court upon the whole matter that the law is for the said Polly Harris.... Ordered by the court that the said William Harris and Benjamin Harris, children of the said Polly, be discharged from the service of Benjamin Harris as apprentices...."

The dates of the children's births were difficult to approximate. It is not known if they were born before or after the family moved from Greenville County, North Carolina to White County, Tennessee; but It seems improbable that very young children would be "bound out." In Benjamin Harris's will he gave "unto my son Benjamin Harris's two children, William & Benjamin Harris, sixty dollars each...." This is all that is known about these children.

    Children:
    1. William HARRIS b abt 1816
    2. Benjamin HARRIS b abt 1818
