Descendants of Elizabeth Harris

Chapter 3 of Part VIII, Descendants of Zachariah Harris

By Garda M. Hodgson

CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH HARRIS AND THOMAS RHODES
(Child #3 of Zachariah Harris and Bathsheba Haley)

Elizabeth Harris3, (Zach.2, Isaac1) was born in Franklin County, Georgia in about 1801; her age was reported as "age 58" in the 1860 census and as "age 70" in the 1870 census. Both censuses were for Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois. She married Thomas Rhodes in about 1820 while the Harris family was still living in Humphreys County, Tennessee. His parents have not been identified, but there is some indication that he may be a younger brother of the Alexander Rhodes who married Elizabeth Pettitte. He was born in about 1795. They moved to Illinois in about 1829. The following year, Zachariah Harris was listed in the Montgomery County, Illinois census next to his sons, Ancil and Benjamin Harris, and his sons-in-law, Thomas and Anderson Rhodes.

Zachariah Harris owned eighty acres of land in Fayette County, Illinois which bordered land owned by his brother, Wooten Harris, in Montgomery County, Illinois. At that early time, anyone who was living near the county line could easily be counted in the wrong county by mistake. In any case, Thomas and Elizabeth were listed in Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois in the subsequent census records. In 1830, they were listed with three children; in the 1835 Illinois State Census, they had four children; and in the 1840 Federal Census they were credited with eight children.

Thomas and Elizabeth Rhodes were not found in the 1850 census records. In fact, they were not the only ones who could not be found; most of the children of Alexander and Elizabeth (Pettitte) Rhodes, with their families, seem to disappear in 1850 only to reappear in 1860. Thomas Rhodes apparently died before 1855. Elizabeth (Harris) Rhodes was listed as head of the family in the 1855 and 1865 Fayette County, Illinois State censuses, and also the 1860 Federal census record. Since they were not found in 1850, we do not know if Thomas was still alive at that time or not. In 1870, Elizabeth was living with her son Jacob, and was not found in the records after that.

The state census records did not list the children by name; they were listed in the same way as children were listed in the early federal census records. We have been unable to identify two of the daughters of Thomas and Elizabeth Rhodes. If the family had been found in 1850, we would probably know the identity of these unidentified daughters.

Ancil Rhodes4 (Eliz. Harris3, Zach.2, Isaac1) was born in Humphreys County, Tennessee in about 1822; he was age 38 when the 1860 census was taken for Ramsey Township, Fayette County, Illinois. He was married twice. He and his first wife, Kitty Ann Pennydine Mahulda Green Vine Shipley, were married on October 7, 1845 in Fayette County, Illinois. They had one child; nothing more is known about her. He then married Martha Ballenger, on August 20, 1848 in Fayette County, Illinois.
